This exam is completely painless and helps us build a complete picture of your current orthodontic health.

  • Other specialty appliances, if needed

We’ll explain why certain treatments are recommended, how long each may take, and what results you can expect.

Emergency Care

At Artemis Smiles Orthodontics, your comfort and safety are our top priorities, especially during the unexpected. While orthodontic emergencies are rare, we understand how distressing even minor issues can feel. Our team is here to offer fast, compassionate, and effective guidance for both major and minor orthodontic concerns.

Have an Emergency?

For any orthodontic emergency, we recommend texting our practice with photos of the issue. Visuals help us respond quickly and accurately — often saving you a trip to the office. Our team is on call to assess the situation and provide the next best step.

Major Orthodontic Emergencies: What You Need to Know

True orthodontic emergencies are rare, but they require immediate attention. These may include:

  • Trauma or injury to the teeth, jaw, or face
  • Intense, persistent pain in the mouth or jaw
  • Severe swelling or infection of the gums or face
  • A broken or severely damaged appliance causing bleeding or breathing issues

What to Do:

  1. Contact your general dentist first — they’re equipped to handle urgent dental injuries like fractured or dislodged teeth.
  2. Seek emergency medical care (ER or urgent care) if:
    • There is uncontrolled bleeding
    • There’s a facial injury or suspected broken bone
    • You are experiencing intense swelling or signs of infection
  •

Once the immediate issue is resolved, our team at Artemis Smiles Orthodontics will work with you to adjust your orthodontic treatment plan accordingly.

Common Orthodontic Issues & At-Home Fixes

Minor issues may not require immediate in-office care but should still be addressed. Here’s how to handle them at home:

Discomfort After Adjustments

  • Mild soreness is normal after getting braces or aligners adjusted.
  • Use over-the-counter pain relief (e.g., ibuprofen) and stick to soft foods for 1–2 days.
  • Rinsing with warm salt water can also soothe discomfort.

Loose or Detached Brackets

  • If a bracket becomes loose but is still attached to the wire, use orthodontic wax to hold it in place.
  • If it completely detaches, save the bracket and bring it to your next appointment.
  • Call or text us to schedule a repair visit.

Poking or Misplaced Wires

  • Use the eraser end of a pencil to gently reposition the wire.
  • Apply orthodontic wax to cover sharp ends and prevent irritation.
  • Do not cut the wire yourself, as this can lead to accidental swallowing or breathing in the wire.

Lost Elastics or Rubber Bands

  • If you’re trained on elastic placement, you may try to reattach it using sterile tweezers.
  • If you’re unsure or can’t find the elastic, contact us so we can replace it promptly.

Mouth Sores or Irritation

  • Appliances can cause temporary irritation to the cheeks, lips, or tongue.
  • Use salt water rinses, orthodontic wax, or topical gels (like Orajel) for relief.
  • Let us know if ulcers persist beyond a few days.

Problems with Removable Appliances

  • If your retainer, aligner, or other removable appliance is bent or broken, stop wearing it.
  • Continued use may worsen the issue or delay treatment.
  • Contact us to determine whether it can be repaired or needs replacing.

Quick Tips for Managing Minor Orthodontic Emergencies

  • Keep orthodontic wax with you at all times
  • Maintain excellent oral hygiene to prevent inflammation or irritation
  • Carry a small dental emergency kit with tweezers, floss, wax, and a mirror when traveling
  • Notify us promptly of any issues, even if they seem minor

We’re Just a Call Away

Remember, even minor discomfort can feel like a big deal when you’re in the middle of treatment. The good news is you don’t have to figure it out alone. At Artemis Smiles Orthodontics, our team is always here to support you.

Dr Bennie is amazing, I have a 13 year old who is not tgat great with brushing and let alone though of braces triggered me with bills of cavities etc.. She was very patient with him and did a fantastic job of explaining him pro and cons of taking care of theeths with barces.

The place has a family vibe with tito the feuendly dog running around and reducing anxiety from kids and helping create a positive environment.

We did a good bit of research and met many orthodontics before deciding on Dr Binne , what i liked the most abt her that her pitch didnt sounded like a sales and not everyone have a smily sales face though she was very genuine and explained the process as well as stayed very patient while we asked all our questions.

She went above and beyond and is doing a great job with my son.
Response from the owner:Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful review! It truly means the world to us. 💙

We know braces can feel overwhelming—especially when you’re navigating brushing habits and the worry of cavities—so we’re glad to hear that your son felt supported and informed every step of the way. Dr. Bennie takes great pride in making sure every patient understands their treatment and feels confident about caring for their smile.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do braces make your smile better?
Yes, braces can significantly enhance your smile by aligning teeth, correcting bite issues, and improving overall dental aesthetics. This transformation leads to a more confident smile and better oral health in the long run.
What skills does an orthodontist need?
An orthodontist needs strong analytical and problem-solving skills to diagnose and create treatment plans, excellent manual dexterity for precise adjustments, effective communication skills to explain procedures, and a compassionate demeanor to put patients at ease during their orthodontic journey.
Why are orthodontists important?
Orthodontists are important because they specialize in diagnosing, preventing, and treating dental and facial irregularities, ultimately improving oral health, function, and the aesthetics of smiles. Their expertise ensures healthier teeth alignment and bites, contributing to overall well-being.
Do braces affect your smile?
Yes, braces do affect your smile during treatment by gradually aligning your teeth. While they may initially change your smile's appearance, the end result is a straighter, healthier smile that enhances your overall aesthetic.
How effective is water flosser for braces?
Water flossers are highly effective for braces, as they thoroughly clean around brackets and wires, reducing plaque buildup and improving gum health. While they complement traditional flossing, they should not completely replace it for optimal oral hygiene.
What types of braces are available?
There are several types of braces available, including traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces, and clear aligners like Invisalign. Each option offers unique benefits to suit different needs and aesthetic preferences.
How long do braces take to work?
Braces typically start working within a few weeks, but the overall treatment time can vary greatly, usually ranging from 18 months to 3 years, depending on individual cases and treatment goals. Regular adjustments and patient cooperation also play crucial roles in ensuring timely results.
Can adults get braces as well?
Yes, adults can absolutely get braces. Orthodontic treatment is effective for all ages, and many adults seek braces to achieve a healthier, straighter smile.
What are the benefits of invisible braces?
Invisible braces offer a discreet and comfortable way to straighten your teeth without the noticeable appearance of traditional metal braces. They are removable, making oral hygiene easier, and allow for greater flexibility in your lifestyle.
How often should you visit an orthodontist?
You should visit your orthodontist every 4 to 8 weeks during your treatment. Regular check-ups are essential to monitor progress, adjust appliances, and ensure your treatment stays on track for the best results.
What foods should be avoided with braces?
Avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods such as popcorn, nuts, hard candy, gum, and taffy while wearing braces. These can damage your brackets and wires, prolonging treatment and causing discomfort. Opt for softer foods to ensure a smoother orthodontic journey.
Are braces painful when first applied?
When braces are first applied, you may experience some discomfort or pressure during the initial adjustment period. This sensation typically subsides within a few days as your mouth adapts to the new braces.
How to care for braces during treatment?
To care for braces during treatment, maintain excellent oral hygiene by brushing after every meal and using a floss threader to clean between wires and teeth. Avoid sticky, hard, or crunchy foods that could damage the braces. Regularly visit your orthodontist for adjustments and care advice.
What is the average cost of braces?
The average cost of braces typically ranges from $3,000 to $7,000, depending on various factors like treatment complexity, location, and type of braces chosen. It's best to consult with your orthodontist for a personalized estimate.
Can braces fix an overbite effectively?
Yes, braces can effectively fix an overbite by gradually shifting the teeth and aligning the jaw. This treatment often results in improved bite function and a more balanced smile.
What happens if braces are damaged?
If braces are damaged, it's essential to contact your orthodontist immediately. They will assess the situation and schedule an appointment to repair or replace any broken components, ensuring your treatment progresses smoothly without delays.
How do braces improve dental health?
Braces improve dental health by correcting misaligned teeth and jaws, which enhance proper bite function, make oral hygiene easier, and reduce the risk of dental issues such as cavities, gum disease, and excessive wear on teeth.
What is a retainer, and why is it needed?
A retainer is a custom-made dental appliance worn after orthodontic treatment to maintain teeth positions. It prevents shifting and ensures the long-term success of your orthodontic results, keeping your smile aligned and beautiful.
How can I ensure my braces stay clean?
To keep your braces clean, brush your teeth after every meal using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Floss daily and consider using an interdental brush to reach hard-to-clean areas. Additionally, rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash for extra protection against plaque buildup.
Can braces help with crowding teeth?
Yes, braces are designed to effectively address crowding teeth by gradually shifting them into their proper positions, creating a more aligned and aesthetically pleasing smile. This not only improves appearance but also enhances oral health.
What is the process for getting braces?
The process for getting braces begins with an initial consultation, where your orthodontist evaluates your teeth and develops a personalized treatment plan. Following this, braces are placed, and regular follow-up appointments ensure progress and adjustments.
Are there alternatives to traditional braces?
Yes, there are several alternatives to traditional braces, including clear aligners (like Invisalign), ceramic braces, and lingual braces. Each option offers varying degrees of discretion and comfort while effectively correcting dental alignment issues.
What age is best for getting braces?
The ideal age for getting braces is typically between 10 and 14 years old, when most of the permanent teeth have emerged. However, each patient's needs are unique, and an orthodontic evaluation can determine the best timing for treatment.
How can braces affect speech temporarily?
Braces can temporarily affect speech by causing minor discomfort or alterations in tongue positioning, which may lead to lisping or difficulty articulating certain sounds. However, most individuals quickly adapt and regain normal speech within a few weeks.
What is the role of an orthodontist?
An orthodontist specializes in diagnosing, preventing, and treating dental and facial irregularities, including misaligned teeth and jaws. They design personalized treatment plans using braces, aligners, and other appliances to enhance oral function and achieve a beautiful smile.
What materials are commonly used for braces?
Braces are commonly made from materials such as stainless steel, ceramic, and even plastic. Stainless steel offers durability, while ceramic provides a more aesthetic option, and flexible plastic can be used for clear aligners, catering to different patient preferences.
Do braces lead to better oral hygiene?
Braces can improve oral hygiene by aligning teeth, making them easier to clean. However, they require diligent care, as food can get trapped, necessitating proper brushing and flossing techniques to maintain optimal oral health during treatment.
What are the signs braces are working?
Signs that braces are working include noticeable movement of your teeth towards their desired positions, improved bite alignment, and reduced gaps between teeth. You may also experience some discomfort as your teeth adjust, indicating the process is taking effect.
Can braces correct gaps between teeth?
Yes, braces can effectively correct gaps between teeth by gradually aligning them into their proper positions. This adjustment improves both the aesthetic appearance and overall function of your smile.
How should pain from braces be managed?
To manage pain from braces, take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed, apply orthodontic wax to soothe irritation, and stick to soft foods. Additionally, rinsing with warm salt water can help alleviate discomfort and promote healing.
